What is Benchmarking?
According to the U.S. Department of Energy1, energy benchmarking is the process of accounting for and comparing a building’s current energy performance with its energy baseline, or comparing a building’s energy performance with the energy performance of similar buildings.
Energy benchmarking improves stakeholders’ understanding of building energy performance, allowing individuals and organizations to better analyze trends and make better-informed decisions to accelerate efficiency. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency cites an average three-year energy use reduction of seven percent in benchmarked buildings, based on analysis of more than 35,000 buildings. These and other findings suggest significant savings potential associated with energy benchmarking. And benchmarking isn’t just for energy.
